The River Ugie — pronounced “You-Gee” — may be a relatively small river, but to those who know and fish it, it is one of Aberdeenshire’s true hidden gems.

Our members include anglers with many years of experience on the river and are always happy to offer advice to those fishing the Ugie for the first time.

Whether you are an experienced salmon angler, a sea trout enthusiast or simply discovering river fishing, you will find a warm welcome on the banks of the Ugie.

We hope you will take the opportunity to visit, enjoy the river and its surroundings, and perhaps leave at the end of the day with a fish, a story, or simply a memory worth keeping.

The River Ugie is primarily a spate river, flowing through the Buchan countryside before entering the North Sea at Peterhead — a town whose history and identity have been shaped by fishing for generations.

Within living memory, the Ugie was regarded as one of Scotland’s finest sea trout rivers. Historical accounts tell of extraordinary catches, including reports of hundreds of sea trout being caught during exceptional periods.

Although the river has changed considerably since those remarkable days, its history reminds us of the potential of the Ugie and the importance of protecting it for the future.

The River Ugie is primarily a spate river, entering the North Sea at Peterhead — one of Europe's leading whitefish ports and a town with a fishing heritage stretching from the days of whaling through to today's pelagic and demersal fishing industries.

Within living memory, the Ugie was regarded as one of Scotland's finest sea trout rivers. Historical records tell of remarkable catches, including accounts of as many as 600 sea trout being caught from the river in a single day.

Although the river has changed considerably since those days, its history demonstrates the extraordinary potential of the Ugie and provides the Association with a strong incentive to protect and improve it for future generations.

Today, the Ugie Angling Association is committed to protecting, maintaining and improving the river and its surrounding environment.

Much of this work is carried out by members and volunteers who generously give their time throughout the year. From maintaining access and caring for the riverbanks to supporting conservation initiatives, their work helps ensure that the Ugie remains a river that can be enjoyed by both local and visiting anglers.

Our ambition is simple: to see healthy populations of salmon and sea trout returning to the river and to ensure that future generations have the opportunity to experience the enjoyment of fishing the Ugie.
